The Stanley Cup is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada in 1982.
Lord Stanley purchased the Cup for $48.67. The Cup was very first awarded to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association in 1983.
The Cup is passed from winning team to winning team.
New trophies are made of other major league sports every year, but the same Stanley Cup is actually passed down among the winning teams every year. The names of the coaches, players, management, and staff of each winning team are engraved on the Cup.
The original trophy is a bowl called the "Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup," the "Replica Cup" is housed at the Hall of Fame, and the "Presentation Cup" is the trophy that is passed among the winning teams every year.
When New Jersey won the Stanley Cup in 1995, Martin Brodeur drove around Montreal with the Cup in his front passenger seat.
He even made sure it was wearing its seat belt!
Currently, the Stanley Cup is 35.24 inches tall and weighs 34.5 pounds.
It is always changing, however, as rings are old taken off and new rings are added to make room for the names of new winning teams.
Every member of the team gets the Cup for 24 hours.
Winning the Stanley Cup takes the whole team, and the NHL likes to recognize each member's participation in the victory.

In 1924, several members of the Canadiens team left the Cup by the roadside while repairing a flat tire.
Thankfully, they were able to find the Cup exactly where they left it on the snow bank.
Since 1950, players have upheld the tradition of not touching the Cup until they win it.
The tradition began when Ted Lindsay (captain of the Detroit Red Wings) lifted the Cup over his head and skated all around the rink with it.
In order to get their names engraved on the Cup, players must have played a minimum of 41 games for the winning team during the regular season and at least 1 game during the Stanley Cup Finals.
However, the team can petition the league to include other team members if they so choose.
